A blog is great alternative to more standard websites. They are much quicker to set up, have plenty of post formatting options and you can select from many customizable templates. Whilst many blogs have very little in the way of traffic, there are also some that have a substantial search engine presence and readership.
The blogs with more substantial readership are those that are active. Active blogs are regularly updated with fresh new blog posts. Some update them with a new blog post added each day. This gives them a larger number of overall blog posts than others, and more substantial archives for their readership. Whilst you don’t necessarily have to update your blog everyday; add new posts regularly. That will keep the blog fresh, and add more posts for the search engines to pick up.
The blog’s template is also fairly essential to expanding your readership. The template and layout of the blog can include many additional options. There you can add gadgets to further customize your blog. Among them are translator tools which will translate the blog to French, German etc. Blog archives should also be included to provide shortcut links to previously submitted posts.
Templates also have blogrolls with which you can exchange links with various other related blogs. With one of those you can then have a number of backlinks to your blog added to various others included within your blogroll. The backlinks on other blogrolls will expand your readership.
Backlinks are essential to expanding traffic. Blogs with expansive readership tend to have plenty of links to them on various other websites. To further expand the number of backlinks to your blog consider guest blogging. Guest blogging is when you post on other blogs. In the guest post you can add a bio and backlink to your own blog. There are a few sites which provide a platform for guest blogging such as PostJoint. At those sites you can find blogs to submit guest posts to.
Or you could check out blog directories. The blog directories are sites that include links to a variety of blogs. If you register with them you can add your blog to the directories. A couple of directories to note, which you can add your blog to, are Technorati and OnToplist. Having some links on these sites could enhance the blog’s PageRank.
Do not overlook the formatting of blog posts. Would a magazine without any images have a substantial readership? Add some non-copyrighted images to your blog posts from sites such as Oookaboo which has public domain photos. Remember that photos can also boost the SEO (search engine optimization) of your blog as image search engine options pick them up on them. Add some titles for the images to give them some extra SEO.
There are also some blog options that you can add to retain readership. For example, email subscription and RSS Feed. If you add a subscription option email notifications are sent to your subscribed readership when you update the blog. An RSS Feed will syndicate your blog’s posts with a feed reader. Then anyone with an aggregator can keep track of your latest posts. Such options are widely included with blog hosts.
The blogs that have the higher PageRanks have hundreds of thousands of pageviews each year. By expanding the blog’s backlinks, including images in posts, keeping it active, adding subscription options and additional template gadgets your blog can also have a more substantial readership.
